Agency
Virginia’s administrator is the Unclaimed Property Division of the Virginia Department of the Treasury. The Division holds dormant intangible property for owners, including unclaimed surplus reported from foreclosure and tax-sale distributions, and (per the agency) has begun automatically returning certain unclaimed property to verified owners without a filed claim.

The Department states vaMoneySearch.gov is “the only official source for unclaimed property in the Commonwealth.” Searching and filing are free.
How surplus escheats here
Unclaimed foreclosure/tax-sale surplus in virginia that is not claimed from the disbursing party is reported and remitted to the Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Division under the custodial model in escheat-and-unclaimed-property. Claiming
Search by name at vamoneysearch.gov; if a match is found the site provides claim instructions and a secure portal for uploading proof of identity and ownership. Heirs claim with estate documentation. Some properties are returned automatically without a claim. No fee is charged.
▸ For Former Owners. Search vaMoneySearch.gov by your name first — Virginia may already be holding (or auto-returning) surplus from your foreclosed property. The claim is free and not time-barred.
▸ For Investors / Operators. Virginia escheats unclaimed surplus to the state Treasury fund (custodial), so a downstream owner claim does not affect title you acquired or revive redemption. Verify the county/clerk surplus clock on the virginia page before modeling surplus strategy.
